Piramal Pharma lifts Yapan Bio stake to 33.33% in ₹122 crore CDMO push
What's the deal? Piramal Pharma Limited (PPL)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → invested INR 101.77 crore — about US$13.7 million — for a 27.78% equity stake in Hyderabad-based Yapan Bio Pvt Ltd, disclosed in a press release dated December 21, 2021. Yapan is a contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) focused on biologics, bio-therapeutics, and vaccines. The stake was acquired through primary and secondary share purchases.
What's the endgame? PPL said the investment augments Piramal Pharma Solutions (PPS), its CDMO business, by broadening its offerings in large molecules. Specifically, the company linked the move to development and manufacturing support for human clinical trials.
Stake math. On April 4, 2022, PPL bought an additional 5.55% for Rs. 20.35 crore, lifting its aggregate stake to 33.33% as of March 31, 2023. For FY2023 consolidation, PPL accounted for Yapan's share of loss at Rs. 0.20 crore.
Why now? On October 18, 2022, Yapan opened a new process development facility at Genome Valley, Hyderabad, under a US$1 million expansion plan. It was the first major expansion since Piramal's December 2021 investment. The facility supports end-to-end development of RNA, DNA, and gene therapy products starting from plasmids.
