Sodiar backs Aragon Photonics with €150,000 for mining-waste monitoring

What's the deal? Spain's public company SodiarDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has extended €150,000 in debt financing to Aragon Photonics, a Zaragoza-based firm specialising in photonic sensing over fibre-optic cabling. The money will fund Innovamina-RS, a European project focused on continuous monitoring of waste falls from mining operations.

What's the endgame? Innovamina-RS aims to improve early detection of risks and boost safety at mining sites using advanced sensing technology. Aragon Photonics positions itself as an international reference in photonic solutions applied to critical infrastructure.

Who's involved? The agreement was signed by Mar Paños, director general of industrial promotion and innovation for the Government of Aragón, and Aragon Photonics chief executive officer Francisco M. L. The deal was channelled through Sodiar's Innovation FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

Why now? Sodiar says it wants the financing to act as a lever, or "efecto tractor," to help attract additional capital for a fast-growing technology field. It sees sensing playing a growing role in mining, infrastructure, and industrial monitoring.

The bigger fund: Aragon Photonics is the latest company to tap Sodiar's Innovation Fund, launched in 2011 under the Innovaragón programme with an initial €7 million. The fund has since financed 100 projects worth €12.113 million, mobilising combined business investment of €49.5 million and helping create or maintain 2,293 jobs.

The fund works mainly through participative loans, combining a fixed interest rate with a variable tranche tied to company results. It underpins Sodiar's "Acelerador de Aragón" programme, certified within the European Innovation Council ecosystem.

The signal: The deal shows regional public money increasingly steering into deep-tech niches like photonics, using small tickets to unlock larger private and European backing. For Aragon Photonics, the fund's EIC "seal" opens doors to broader European support.
