Ommo raises $30M Series A to give robots “spatial intuition”

A rotating permanent magnet inside a host unit generates a magnetic field, while sensors as small as 0.8mm read the signal and compute full 6DoF position data at sub-millimetre precision.

Why does it matter? Robots struggle to sense where their own limbs are when vision, touch, or encoders fail — for example, when fingers occlude each other or a tool enters a confined space. Ommo's permanent-magnet approach works through occlusions and, unlike traditional electromagnetic coils, resists metal interference while staying small enough to embed in a robot's fingertip, a wearable, or a medical device.

Why now? Ommo first proved its technology in surgical navigation, a “highly controlled” setting with near-zero error tolerance. It now serves more than 100 medical-device firms and holds an ISO 13485 quality certification. In the year before the August 2026 announcement, embodied-AI customers hitting precision limits in gripping, inserting, and twisting tasks approached the company directly.

What's the money for? Ommo will iterate its core positioning system, build out mass-production capacity, and push deployment across embodied intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare. Its first data-collection glove already carries a medical-grade magnetic sensor to capture human hand movements.

What could go wrong? Ommo acknowledges that commercialising permanent-magnet positioning means solving complex challenges at once — signal generation, sensor calibration, wireless sync, and production consistency. The embodied-AI market it is chasing also faces a shared bottleneck: a severe shortage of 3D physical-operation datasets needed to train robots.
