What's the endgame? MIST's platform centres on a Proof of Funds Account that holds verified living expenses in Australian dollars, in an account in the student's name, and releases them progressively throughout their studies. It also bundles document verification, source-of-funds validation, fraud detection, and serviceability assessments.
Why now? Australia requires visa applicants to prove almost $30,000 in annual living expenses under the Genuine Student framework. With around 300,000 students expected in 2026 — representing almost $9 billion in declared financial capacity — confirming those funds stay available is a growing priority.
Founder John Crutchley said the platform builds on existing checks rather than adding new hurdles. "This is about strengthening confidence, not creating additional barriers," he said, adding that it helps "ensure students continue to have access to the verified funds they relied upon during the visa process."
Where it's landing: La Trobe University has incorporated MIST into its Genuine Student process, using it in offer letters across Kenya and Zimbabwe. Expansion is underway into Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
The signal: International education contributes around $51 billion to Australia's economy each year, making it one of the nation's largest export industries. As governments tighten scrutiny on student finances, fintech built to verify and safeguard those funds is emerging as infrastructure for the sector.
