Advocate raises $18M seed to open up commercial insurance data

What's the deal? Advocate has raised $18 million in seed funding, CEO Ashwin AgarwalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → announced. The startup helps commercial insurance professionals compare policy prices and coverage across a market it calls the last trillion-dollar sector without transparency.

Why it matters? Commercial insurance policies are bespoke contracts, hard to compare across properties, carriers, and brokers. Advocate says its platform lets professionals find coverage gaps, look up carrier pricing, and build data-driven proposals.

What's the endgame? Advocate spent half a decade building a data network on top of policy servicing for loan servicers and brokers. That work produced a platform with access to more than $7 billion of real-time insurance premium and coverage data.

Agarwal points to the kind of insights the data surfaces: the market prices Chicago apartments at 1.8x the risk of New York City, and assault coverage is 5x harder to obtain than flood coverage nationally. The company is building toward "transparency, accuracy, and eventually liquidity" for the market, he said.

By the numbers: The round sits in roughly the 99th percentile for all US seed rounds on record, a sample of more than 77,000 deals, placing Advocate's raise well above the typical early-stage cheque.

The signal: A large seed round for insurance data reflects investor appetite for startups digitising opaque, paper-heavy markets. If Advocate can turn buried loss records into usable pricing intelligence, it aims to reshape how brokers and businesses manage risk.
