RPG Life Sciences carves out API arm with ₹700 crore backing from InvAscent
What's the deal? Mumbai-based RPG Life SciencesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is spinning out its active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) business into a separate company, RPG API, backed by a ₹700 crore (about $73 million) growth equity investment from private equity firm InvAscentDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The new entity will focus on niche, high-value products.
What's the endgame? The carve-out gives the API business dedicated management, growth capital, and flexibility to expand. The plan centres on building manufacturing capacity, widening the product portfolio, and acquisitions — including a proposed purchase of Actis Generics.
Why now? Managing director Ashok Nair says India's API opportunity is growing as global drugmakers diversify sourcing away from a single country. "The trend has shifted where customers are wanting sourcing diversification, reducing the concentration risk," he said.
By the numbers: The API business grew 35% in the April-June quarter of 2026, partly aided by a favourable base, versus 15% growth in the formulations business. RPG holds around ₹300 crore in cash to support expansion alongside the InvAscent funding.
Rather than compete in commoditised APIs, RPG targets low-volume, high-value products requiring complex chemistry and multi-step synthesis. Nair says these carry higher entry barriers and are less exposed to price competition.
What's the endgame? (part two) On a possible separate listing of the API business, Nair said the immediate priority is execution. "We have formed RPG API as a dedicated API business to bring sharper management focus, dedicated growth capital, and greater strategic flexibility," he said.
The signal: The move reflects a broader bet that India can win share as pharmaceutical buyers spread supply-chain risk beyond China. Nair frames it not as India replacing China, but as customers "reducing the concentration risk" by building multiple sourcing options.
