Upstream Biotechnology raises seed round for 'on-demand' crop defense tech

What's the deal? North Carolina-based Upstream Biotechnology has raised a seed round led by LeVert Ventures, with participation from Corteva Catalyst, Silver Blue, and VTC VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The startup is developing a molecular "SwitchBlade" that activates a crop's disease defenses only when and where they are needed.

What's the endgame? Plants already carry the genes to fight disease, but running those defenses constantly drains energy that could fuel growth. Upstream's platform regulates trait activation at the level of protein translation, keeping defenses dormant under normal conditions and switching them on in response to stress.

Why does it matter? Founded on plant immunity research from Professor Xinnian Dong's lab at Duke University, the technology targets what cofounder and chief executive officer George Greene calls "one of the central tradeoffs in crop biotechnology": improving disease resistance without the yield penalties that come with always-on defenses.

How does it work? "We're using the plant's natural immune system or defense response and adding this control layer to fine tune its performance," Greene said. The response is also localized to the site of infection, rather than triggering the whole plant, which further limits yield drag.

What's next? Greene said the capital will advance the SwitchBlade platform, expand validation across more crops, strengthen intellectual property, and support collaborations with seed industry partners. The technology can be adapted for crops from soy, corn, and rice to tomatoes, and for threats ranging from fungal pathogens to drought and heat.

The signal: Corteva Catalyst's participation points to how major seed companies are eyeing new trait technologies. As LeVert managing partner Karen LeVert put it, Upstream's "partnership-driven model aligns well with how major seed companies evaluate and deploy new trait technologies."
