Northwest Pump buys TechStar to grow alternative fuel arm

What's the deal? Northwest Pump & EquipmentDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Co. has acquired TechStar CNG Systems, a Pacific Northwest provider of renewable natural gas (RNG), compressed natural gas (CNG), hydrogen, and alternative fueling solutions. Terms were not disclosed.

What each side brings: Portland-based Northwest Pump, founded in 1959, distributes and services fueling and industrial infrastructure across the Western US, with more than 500 employees and 26 branch locations. TechStar, founded in 2012 by Greg Stone, builds CNG and RNG fueling systems for commercial fleets, transit agencies, utilities, and municipalities.

What's the endgame? The deal expands Northwest Pump's New Energy portfolio across RNG, CNG, hydrogen, and electric vehicle charging. Stone joins the New Energy team under Jim Moran, keeping his customer role while broadening the company's capabilities.

"Greg has built an outstanding reputation for technical expertise and innovation, and TechStar's capabilities are a natural complement to our growing New Energy strategy," said Bob Mathews, president and chief executive officer of Northwest Pump.

What changes for customers? Stone said joining Northwest Pump lets TechStar "expand those capabilities across a much broader footprint" while maintaining its existing technical support.

The signal: As fleets and utilities weigh cleaner fuels, traditional petroleum infrastructure players are adding alternative fueling expertise to stay relevant. Northwest Pump is positioning itself to serve customers across petroleum, industrial, and emerging energy markets through the transition.
