What's the deal? AvalonBayDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (NYSE: AVB) and Equity ResidentialDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (NYSE: EQR) have unveiled Vivmark Residential as the name of the company that will be created through their previously announced merger of equals, which they expect to become the largest publicly traded multifamily real estate platform in the US. The combined company plans to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker VMRK.
By the numbers: On completion, Vivmark Residential is expected to hold a pro forma equity market capitalisation of roughly $53 billion and an enterprise value of about $71 billion. It would own more than 180,000 apartment homes, with 10,000-plus additional units under construction. As of June 30, 2026, AvalonBay held interests in 322 communities with more than 99,000 homes, while Equity Residential owned and managed 312 communities totalling more than 85,500 units.
Why it matters: By combining portfolios, development pipelines and balance sheets, the two REITs aim to gain operating scale, capital allocation flexibility and long-term growth across high-demand coastal and Sun Belt markets — from Boston, New York and Washington to Dallas, Austin and Denver. The merger remains subject to customary closing conditions, including shareholder approval, and the companies will keep operating independently under their existing names until it closes.
The signal: Benjamin Schall, AvalonBay's chief executive and the incoming CEO of Vivmark Residential, said the name reflects an ambition to set a higher standard for the rental housing experience. According to the companies, “viv” derives from the Latin vivere (“to live”) and “mark” signals quality and lasting impact. The deal reflects continued consolidation among large multifamily REITs seeking scale and financial flexibility in a competitive housing market.
