Steelhead acquires Visual Shop and Bluestreak to consolidate metal finishing software
What's the deal? Steelhead Technologies has acquired Visual Shop and Bluestreak, two providers of job shop management and quality management system (QMS) software. Steelhead says customers of all three companies now have access to its all-in-one system built on a digital production floor, with automation and AI built in.
What does each side do? Steelhead builds purpose-built software for metal finishing shops, uniting production, quality, and customer service in one platform. Visual Shop, produced by Cornerstone Systems, and Bluestreak both serve heat treating and metal finishing job shops — Bluestreak for over 20 years.
Why now? Steelhead CEO Jeff Halonen says top government officials and contractors are urgently reshoring work and scaling production. He argues job shops must use technology to increase capacity without adding headcount.
Why sell? "To stay competitive in the long term, we would need to build a new product on a modern platform," says Kevin Pluedeman, president of Cornerstone Systems. Bluestreak founder Todd Wenzel says partnering with Steelhead lets it deliver "at an entirely new scale."
What's the endgame? Steelhead says it is accelerating investment in metal finishing, including work toward FedRAMP to meet the security standards CMMC compliance requires. It is dedicating engineering, support, and product resources to fine-tune workflows and draw on the experience at Visual Shop and Bluestreak.
What changes for customers? Steelhead says customers will gain access to the people who know metal finishing and heat treating best. Wenzel says Bluestreak's focus "remains entirely on supporting customers seamlessly today while building the ultimate, next-generation platform for the next 20 years."
The signal: The deal folds two long-established niche software makers into a single AI-driven platform, a bet that reshoring and workforce pressure will push job shops toward modern, consolidated tools.
