Sheffield's Cafeology changes hands in management buyout

What's the deal? Sheffield-based coffee company CafeologyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has undergone a partial management buyout, handing a majority stake to a team led by head of coffee Steve Hampshire and head of operations Joe Cross.

What does the company do? Founded in 2001, Cafeology imports, roasts, and distributes ethically sourced coffee. Its customers include universities, sports venues, cafes, restaurants, and independent coffee retailers.

The terms: Existing shareholders Andy McClatchey, Toni Unkles, and founder Bryan Unkles will stay involved over the medium term to ensure "a smooth transition for customers, suppliers and staff". What's the endgame? The buyout is designed to keep Cafeology independently owned while funding growth. "This exciting new chapter will not only underpin Cafeology's future as an independently owned business, but enable sustainable growth," said Bryan Unkles.

FW Capital senior investment executive Alex Gent said it was "excited to back a highly experienced and ambitious management team". Hart Shaw Corporate Finance advised the selling shareholders.

The signal: Management buyouts remain a route for founder-led businesses to secure succession without selling to outside trade buyers — here, regional pension-backed funding is keeping ownership and jobs local.
