Agscent raises A$5M for AI 'digital dog's nose' scent tech

What's the endgame? Agscent builds sensing technology that combines artificial intelligence, biological signal analysis, and sensors to identify chemical signatures in breath and air. Its early work targets livestock: pregnancy detection, disease identification, and methane measurement.
Why the cattle focus? Its system can detect pregnancy from a cow's breath as early as 18 days after insemination, versus around 40 days for traditional testing, without invasive procedures. Founder Dr Bronwyn Darlington, a behavioural economist and farmer, says the goal is to build "in effect, a digital dog's nose."
The numbers: Agscent's methane measurement work has generated more than A$2.8 million in revenue in Australia and abroad. The company's valuation more than doubled over the past 18 months.
What's the traction? Agscent is running validation programmes in the US with Dairy Farmers of America — which represents about one-third of US dairy production — and Merck Animal HealthDealroom has a profile for this one. An unusual origin: Part of Agscent's technology traces to sensing work NASA first developed to monitor astronaut health. Darlington said she found the relevant patents in NASA's online library while working from her New South Wales farm during the Covid pandemic, then licensed elements of it.
The signal: The A$5 million round is a modest cheque — in roughly the fifth percentile by amount — reflecting the early stage of Agscent's commercialisation. But paired with revenue and US validation deals, it marks steady progress for a niche of agtech betting that machines can read biological signals humans can't.
