What's the endgame? Founded in 2024, Plantner extracts and purifies useful compounds from discarded or unused seaweed to make industry-specific marine biomaterials. Using formulation and polymerisation technology, it develops materials for the bio, medical device, and beauty sectors.

Its core focus is localising and commercialising alginate, the world's second-largest marine biomaterial. It runs joint research with mid-sized companies, public institutions, and startups to tailor materials to each industry.

What's the money for? Plantner plans to build domestic mass-production facilities for alginate and expand R&D into industry-specific materials. It intends a phased entry into overseas markets, including the US.

Why now? Marine biotechnology is drawing attention as a next-generation eco-friendly materials industry, driven by interest in sustainable raw materials, carbon reduction, and the circular economy. Plantner already operates an organic fertiliser business in Vietnam using unused seaweed and agricultural by-products.

The company won a Silver Award at the 2026 Edison Awards. In Vietnam, it became the first foreign company to win at Techfest Vietnam, was selected for the KOICA CTS SEED 2 project, and featured in a VTV2 documentary.

The signal: As the biomaterials industry reshapes around supply-chain stability, more startups are moving to localise seaweed-based materials. Plantner aims to cut import dependence and build global competitiveness on its marine biotech.
