What's the endgame? Robai builds a robot's "motor nerves" rather than its brain, letting machines learn their own body structure and movement. Its platform, Robot Academy, uses "AI Self-Exploration" so a robot can map its own joints, sensors, and physical limits without human input.
The technology combines three models: one that recognises current actions, one that tries out meaningful movements, and one that learns how the body's structure and motion relate. Together, they let a robot understand its own body through repetition.
Why now? Robot foundation models (RFMs) are advancing fast at generating high-level commands, but turning those into real movement still requires custom control systems and manual tuning for each hardware type. Robai aims to replace that step with general-purpose, AI-based control software.
The company was founded by a team with research experience in robot AI and control. It will use the funding to advance its self-exploration technology, run tests on physical robots, and hire more R&D staff, starting with industrial robots before expanding to service robots, humanoids, and soft robots.
"For the robot industry to spread in earnest, we first have to change the structure that requires rebuilding control software from scratch every time new hardware appears," said chief executive Jung Won-young.
The signal: Yoo Dong-heon, head of investment at Korea Investment Accelerator, said RFMs are automating high-level decisions but "the final stretch of running those on actual hardware is still tied to manual human work." He said Robai targets that gap with a rare team able to handle everything from hardware to AI, positioning it well in the shift toward physical AI.
