Ex-Porsche CFO Lutz Meschke backs care-tech startup BLACKPIN IoT
What's the deal? BLACKPIN IoT, a German care-tech startup, has raised an angel round from three investors: Lutz Meschke, former chief financial officer of PorscheDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → AG, alongside Volker Zeh and Michael Musick. The company is building an AI-powered sensor bed mat designed to prevent pressure ulcers, known as decubitus, in immobile patients.
What's the endgame? The mat detects movement and lying positions, then flags risky periods and recommends when to reposition a patient. It also automates documentation and reminders, aiming to cut paperwork and free up carers' time.
BLACKPIN IoT is a spin-off of BLACKPIN GmbH, which works in secure communication and digital collaboration. Founders Sandra Jörg, Regine Haschka-Helmer, and Norbert Mittwollen want to connect people and machines more closely to support carers and relatives.
Why now? Germany faces a widening care gap. "Compared with today, in 2030 we will have twice as many people in need of care in Germany and 500,000 fewer carers," Meschke said, calling for AI and smart devices to help ease the shortage.
Who's joining? Michael Musick takes an advisory board role. He has worked in healthcare for more than 25 years, spanning medical informatics, MedTech management, and strategic turnarounds, having held several C-level roles.
The expansion play: Volker Zeh, managing director of Suena, a maker of anti-decubitus mattresses, joins as a strategic investor and partner. Zeh, who also serves as honorary consul of Montenegro, plans to drive the startup's international marketing through his network.
The signal: Meschke, who built Porsche Venture during his time at the carmaker, is one of several high-profile backers now betting that AI hardware can address staffing shortages in elderly care. As Europe's care workforce shrinks, investor appetite is shifting toward technology that promises to do more with fewer hands.
