Coverwatch raises $4.5M to rewire commercial insurance with AI

What's the deal? CoverwatchDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised a $4.5M pre-seed round to build an AI-native platform for commercial insurance. CoFound and Restive led the round, with KFund, Liquid 2 Ventures, and others participating.

What's the endgame? The San Francisco startup automates policy analysis, benchmarking, and servicing to tailor coverage to each business's actual risks. On average, it says, it cuts clients' insurance costs by 20 to 40 percent while closing coverage gaps.

Why now? Advances in AI now make it possible to automate the manual work that has long defined brokerage. Coverwatch's pitch targets a structural flaw: because brokers earn commissions, their pay rises alongside client premiums.

By the numbers: US companies spent more than $400B on commercial insurance premiums in 2025, with over $40B going to broker commissions. Coverwatch charges a flat fee instead, soliciting bids from 50-plus carriers per quote to align its incentives with the client.

Founder and chief executive officer Miquel Llobet, who previously ran a Y Combinator-backed homeowner association (HOA) management company, said the team "couldn't just slap an AI bandage on this problem — we had to rethink the process from first principles." Coverwatch was co-founded with Kevin Wu (COO) and Wilmer Yan (CTO).

The product: Its core technology is an information-extraction pipeline that maps each client to the right underwriting questions. Unlike traditional brokers, its work continues after a policy is bound, delivering proactive recommendations as a business grows. HOAs were the initial target and remain the fastest-growing segment; clients also include venture-backed tech firms and scaling consumer brands.

The signal: The round sits in the upper reaches for a pre-seed deal, landing around the 69th percentile by amount. That backing reflects investor appetite for applying AI to entrenched, incentive-conflicted industries — where measurable cost savings offer a clear wedge against legacy players.
