WATT Fuel Cell raises late-stage round to scale home fuel cell push

What's the deal? WATT Fuel Cell has closed a late-stage equity financing round backed by existing and new investors, the Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania company said on July 23. The amount was not disclosed. WATT develops and manufactures solid oxide fuel cell systems that run on propane and natural gas.

What's the endgame? The capital will fund hiring, more production capacity, and customer deployments. Chief among them is a previously announced agreement with Hope GasDealroom has a profile for this one. What is WATT HOME? The system pairs WATT's fuel cell technology with battery storage and inverters to deliver residential backup power. It is designed to keep essential home loads running during extended outages, drawing on the natural gas or propane lines homeowners already have.

Chief executive officer Caine Finnerty framed the product as a quieter alternative to conventional generators. "This funding empowers us to drive commercial execution and fast-track the next phase of WATT's growth," he said.

Why the utility matters: Hope Gas is the anchor customer. Its parent, Hope Utilities, runs natural gas and water utilities across eight states and serves more than 200,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers.

"Hope Gas partnered with WATT because WATT HOME offers a practical and innovative way to strengthen energy reliability for our customers," said Morgan O'Brien, chief executive officer of Hope Gas.

The signal: WATT is betting that a utility-scale deployment channel can turn its fuel cell technology into a mainstream home backup product. Tying the round to existing gas infrastructure and a named utility partner signals a shift from niche remote-power applications toward residential markets where reliability and resilience are the selling points.
