Try Dealroom →, a German maker of smart building-automation components, from IK PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Founded in 1984 and based in Engelskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, MDT builds intelligent components for building automation based on the KNX standard.

What does MDT do? It makes wired and wireless KNX products, design sensors, and cloud-based management tools that control heating, ventilation, and lighting in homes and commercial buildings. The company employs about 250 people and serves customers across Europe, India, and the Middle East.

Why now? IK Partners backed MDT in March 2020, and the company has since more than doubled its production capacity and expanded its portfolio to roughly 600 actuators, sensors, and system devices. It also shifted from a founder-led business to a professionally managed organisation with a full C-level team.

What changed under IK? MDT invested in a new, highly automated headquarters in Engelskirchen and now manufactures more than 95% of its products in-house. It also made three acquisitions — Tense, TapkoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Apricum — to deepen its design, software, and international reach.

What's the endgame? With BU, MDT plans to expand beyond the DACH region, keep developing its product and software portfolio, and pursue further acquisitions.

MDT chief executive officer Roger KarnerDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → said the company had grown "from a German specialist to a company with real European reach" and called BU "the right partner for the next chapter of our growth journey."

The signal: Building automation is drawing steady private equity interest as energy efficiency and smart controls become priorities across Europe. MDT's shift from one PE owner to another underscores how mid-market industrial specialists are being groomed for international scale.
