FarmWatt lands $3.9M seed to turn crop waste into clean energy
What's the deal? FarmWatt Innovations has raised Rs 32.5 crore ($3.9 million) in a seed round co-led by IAN Alpha FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Rainmatter. The Indian startup, founded in 2023, aggregates agricultural residue and channels it as feedstock for the country's bioenergy sector.
Why now? India burns roughly 92 million tonnes of crop residue each year, releasing an estimated 34 million tonnes of CO2 while degrading soil and air quality. At the same time, government-backed programmes have spurred rapid investment in compressed biogas (CBG) and other green energy projects, creating demand for reliable biomass with no organised platform to supply it.
What's the endgame? FarmWatt plans to move beyond aggregation into its own portfolio of CBG, bio-pellet, and biochar plants, building what founder Kumar Neelendu calls a "scalable circular bioeconomy." The fresh capital will fund more biomass collection networks, new aggregation hubs, machinery, and hiring.
Where next? The company intends to expand across states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar. It also plans to add digital supply chain tools, carbon credits, and biomass preprocessing to its lineup.
Neelendu framed the timing around a supply-demand gap: "As on the one hand, we had industries coming up in the biogas sector, like RelianceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, IOCL, HPCL, BPCL. And, on the other, we had a situation where farmers were burning agri-waste."
The signal: The round sits in the top 2% of seed deals for Indian food startups over the past four years, a sign of investor appetite for the country's clean energy transition. As IAN Alpha Fund's Sarika Saxena put it, turning underused crop residue into bioenergy feedstock "isn't just an environmental hurdle—it's a massive supply-chain opportunity."
