Travel + Leisure bets $343M on timeshare expansion into Maui and Hilton Head

What's the deal? Travel + LeisureDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Co. is acquiring Yes Vacations and buying Spinnaker ResortsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → for a combined $343 million upfront. On an earnings call Wednesday, chief executive officer Michael Brown said the deals add 23 resorts and more than 100,000 owners.

Why now? Brown cited inventory as the key rationale, pointing to gaps in Travel + Leisure's network. More than half of the new properties sit in destinations the company did not previously serve.

What's the endgame? The acquisitions expand a portfolio of more than 280 resorts and grow the customer base by over 10%. "Both of these companies are well-run companies that have resorts and destinations where we had white space," Brown said, naming Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Maui as highly demanded locations.

Timeshare owners buy an annual allotment of points redeemable for stays across a resort network, paying maintenance fees on top. Adding more than 100,000 such owners brings recurring fee revenue alongside the new inventory.

The signal: The dual deals point to consolidation in the timeshare industry, as operators buy inventory in high-demand destinations rather than build from scratch.
