Vithas buys GenesisCare's Spanish arm to build oncology network across 10 provinces
What's the deal? Spanish hospital group Vithas has agreed to acquire GenesisCare España, adding a network of 18 centres and units specialising in oncology and radiotherapy across 10 provinces. The deal, announced Tuesday, is still pending approval from Spain's Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC). Financial terms were not disclosed.
What's the endgame? Vithas plans to fold GenesisCare España into its Instituto Oncológico Vithas (IOV), which coordinates cancer care through multidisciplinary work, clinical innovation, research, and teaching. The move positions Vithas as one of Spain's largest private oncology operators.
What changes for patients? GenesisCare patients gain access to Vithas's network of 22 hospitals and 40 medical centres, along with its diagnostic technologies and medical specialties. Vithas patients, in turn, get GenesisCare's expertise in radiotherapy oncology.
The tech: The acquisition brings 18 linear accelerators (LINACs) and reference technologies including the MRIdian MR Linac — an MRI-guided radiotherapy system at Hospital Universitario Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa that adapts treatment in real time for complex or moving tumours — and CyberKnife S7, a robotic radiosurgery platform.
What they said? Vithas chief executive officer Pedro Rico said the deal offers "more capacities, more knowledge, and more therapeutic options to patients and their families." Justin Hely, chief executive officer of GenesisCare UK and Europe, added: "We have worked closely with Vithas for years and are aligned in our approaches to patients."
The signal: Private healthcare consolidation continues in Spain, with oncology — a technology- and capital-intensive specialty — as a key battleground. By absorbing a rival's advanced radiotherapy infrastructure, Vithas is betting on precision medicine to differentiate its cancer care.
