Ex-Huawei driving team raises seed round for AI leisure boats, lands 100M yuan in orders

What's the deal? Shanghai Donggu IntelligentDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, an AI vessel startup also known as Tongzhou Intelligent Navigation, has closed a seed round co-led by InnoAngel FundDealroom has a profile for this one. The company applies autonomous-driving technology to leisure boats and has already secured orders worth 100 million yuan.

Who's behind it? Founded in June 2025, the startup is led by Zhang Chenglun, who has over 10 years in automotive autonomous driving and previously headed HuaweiDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s Commercial Vehicle Solutions Department. His team includes a chief scientist with an AI PhD from the University of Connecticut and a business partner who spent 12 years in Huawei's key account management.

Why now? Zhang argues vessel intelligence lags far behind other sectors. "The leisure boat market is large enough, easy to standardize, and has consumer-facing attributes," he said, adding that customers "are willing to pay" once products deliver value.

What's the endgame? The startup targets leisure boats rather than environmental products, initially selling to boat makers, engine makers, and end users. Proceeds will fund core R&D and mass-production hiring, plus overseas brand building and channel expansion.

By the numbers: The global stock of powered leisure boats — yachts, cruise boats, and fishing boats — sits near 35 million units, with roughly 1 million new units shipped annually. The 2025 new-transaction market is estimated at about $50 billion.

What could go wrong? Traditional leisure boats are complex to operate. In the US, 87% of boat owners lack formal training, and 75% of accidents relate to that — a problem the startup must solve while competing against a growing field of maritime intelligence entrants.

The signal: The round marks a quick re-raise for a team betting that mature automotive autonomous-driving tech can transfer to an under-digitised industry. As more players enter maritime intelligence, Shanghai Donggu's consumer-facing focus stakes out an early position in a hundred-billion-dollar upgrade market.
