Try Dealroom →, a Calgary-based oilfield services company, has agreed to acquire all shares of Citadel DrillingDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Ltd. for US$65 million, subject to closing adjustments. The deal, announced July 21, 2026, will be funded through cash on hand and existing credit facilities.

What each side brings: Ensign is a global land-based drilling and well servicing contractor operating in Canada, the US, and internationally. Citadel adds six high-spec AC drilling rigs in the US Permian region, plus managed pressure drilling packages operated as Opla Energy Services.

The rationale: Ensign said the acquisition increases its Permian capacity by 20% and lifts its market share in the region. It also expects "meaningful cost synergies," according to Robert Geddes, Ensign's president and chief operating officer.

What changes for customers? Citadel's clients gain access to additional rig capacity, advanced drilling technologies, and a broader suite of oilfield services. Geddes said Citadel's fleet features automated drilling control systems capable of drilling the "ultralong reach lateral sections required in the Permian."

Why now? The Permian remains one of the most active drilling regions in North America. Citadel's fleet is equipped in a way closely aligned with Ensign's, easing integration.

What could go wrong? The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions. Ensign cautioned that its forward-looking statements are "not guarantees of future performance."

The signal: The deal reflects continued consolidation among land-based drilling contractors seeking scale and efficiency in high-demand basins. By expanding through acquisition rather than new builds, Ensign is betting on capacity in the Permian to strengthen its position against rivals.
