Frasers Group buys Glasgow's Greaves Sports, ending 95-year family run

Try Dealroom → has acquired Greaves Sports, one of Scotland's last independent specialist sports retailers, according to a supplier notice seen by The Herald. Frasers is expected to keep running Greaves' sole remaining store on Glasgow's Gordon Street under the Greaves brand.
The details: The deal ends the Greaves family's association with Glasgow retail dating to 1930. Led by Sandy Greaves and sister Anne Leslie, the firm once traded from a popular Sauchiehall Street shop — formerly Lumley's — that it acquired in 1960 and ran until 2018.
By the numbers: Companies House filings show Greaves Sports Limited changed its name to Clydesdale Sports Retail Limited in June following the acquisition of its assets by Frasers Group Trading Limited.
What's the endgame? Greaves adds to Frasers' growing Scottish footprint. The group owns the freehold of the House of Fraser building on Glasgow's Buchanan Street, plus the Braehead and Overgate shopping centres near Glasgow and in Dundee.
Why now? Frasers has pursued an "elevation" strategy for several years to push its business upmarket. It said this week that it increased its stake in Hugo Boss to 30.28%, following a cash offer worth nearly €2 billion to acquire the German brand outright in June.
The signal: Majority owned by former Rangers investor Ashley, Frasers keeps consolidating retail under one banner — its portfolio includes Sports Direct, Flannels, GAME, Evans Cycles, and USC. The Greaves purchase absorbs one of Scotland's last independent sports retailers into that expanding empire.
