Finward, headquartered in Munster, Indiana, holds about $2.0 billion in assets, $1.7 billion in deposits, $1.5 billion in loans, and $412 million in assets under management.
What's the endgame? The deal expands First Financial's footprint in northwest Indiana and Chicago, adding a low-cost core deposit franchise and 24 financial centers. Peoples Bank brings a 116-year presence in those markets.
Why now? The acquisition builds on First Financial's earlier 2026 Chicagoland deal, which added 15 retail locations. Together, the two transactions lift First Financial's pro forma deposits in the Chicago metropolitan area by 75%, to more than $4 billion.
What's in it for shareholders? First Financial expects the transaction to be roughly 5% accretive to earnings per share. Because it is structured as an all-stock deal, Finward investors exchange ownership stakes rather than cash.
The signal: The deal reflects continued consolidation among regional US banks seeking scale and stable, low-cost deposits. By stacking two acquisitions in one market, First Financial is betting on density in the Chicagoland region to strengthen its competitive position.
