Sielo Robotics raises CA$1M for Arlo assistive robotic arm

What's the deal? Ottawa startup Sielo RoboticsDealroom has a profile for this one. Founded at the University of Ottawa, the company aims to place the arm in users' homes for beta testing by the end of 2026.

What's the endgame? Sielo says people with lived experience shaped Arlo's design from the start. One of them is Hollis Pierce, its head of accessibility and partnerships, who controls the arm with a space mouse, a six-direction 3D input device.

For Pierce, one milestone stood out. "I'm 38 years old and I've never taken my own selfie," he said, noting his first attempt took about an hour but has improved as the technology evolved.

What's next? The company is building AI features to let the system learn and repeat routine activities. It also wants Arlo to work with the range of controls users already rely on. "People use eye gaze, sip and puff, joysticks … switches in their headrests, their legs," said chief technology officer Rafaël Hébert. "We can translate that to being able to use our product as well."

What could go wrong? Arlo is still under development and needs more real-world testing before broader deployment. Its success will depend on reliable home performance and whether healthcare providers and insurers support adoption. Securing insurance coverage and pricing below rival systems would be key to expanding access.

The signal: Sielo's approach reflects a growing effort to move advanced robotics out of research labs and high-cost medical settings and make them practical and affordable for everyday users.
