Native acquires Frontline Research Group to build AI data layer for African trade

What's the deal? Native, an agentic intelligence company building an operating system for offline trade, has acquired Frontline Research GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a market intelligence firm serving consumer goods companies across more than 14 African markets. Terms were not disclosed. The deal extends Native's footprint from Latin America into Africa.

What each company does: Native turns analog stores into machine-readable 3D Store Graphs, letting AI agents surface insights and direct commercial action. Its subscriptions — Lattice for field execution, Strata for distribution analytics, and Overwatch for commercial optimisation — help brands act in fragmented physical markets. Why now? Roughly $1.7 trillion in consumer spend flows through Africa annually, with about 80% moving through traditional trade — networks of more than 10 million analog stores that global brands struggle to see and measure.

What's the endgame? Native wants to give consumer goods companies a full picture from action to outcome in one subscription. Frontline adds independent market share data showing whether commercial moves translate into real gains.

“Most people would look at Frontline and see a regional research company. We see a proprietary data asset at the center of a $1.7 trillion consumer economy,” said Matt McNabbDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, chief executive officer of Native. He said Frontline's signals “cannot be credibly scraped, inferred or bought off the shelf.”

The hire: Sean Barnes, Frontline's chief executive officer, will join Native as chief strategy officer once the transaction closes. He said pairing Frontline's regional depth with Native's software creates “a fundamentally stronger offering than either company could deliver alone.”

The signal: The deal reflects a push to digitise the fragmented, offline retail networks that dominate emerging markets — turning hard-to-reach store data into a durable input for AI agents. Native is betting that proprietary, ground-level measurement, not scraped data, is the moat in serving the world's largest physical trade markets.
