Hanwha Aerospace raises $500M in Korea's first overseas defense bond

What's the deal? Hanwha AerospaceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised $500 million (US$621.3M) through overseas public offering bonds, marking the first time a South Korean defense company has issued such notes abroad. The three-year fixed-rate notes carry a coupon of 83 basis points over comparable US government bond yields — 32 basis points tighter than initial price guidance.

Why now? The issuance follows the company's A- credit rating from S&P, secured last month and also a first among Korean defense firms.

What's the endgame? Hanwha ran book building across Europe and Asia, drawing $3.3 billion in demand — roughly seven times the offering. It plans to use the proceeds for operations and to repay existing borrowing.

The signal: A defense company tapping international bond markets for the first time — at a spread that tightened during pricing — points to growing foreign investor appetite for South Korea's arms sector. As one Hanwha official put it, the raise reflects investors' "high assessment of Hanwha Aerospace's growth potential and financial soundness."
