Boston Globe Media acquires government-data platform InstaTrac

What's the deal? Boston Globe MediaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired InstaTracDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Massachusetts government-information company founded by former journalist Michael Segal more than 30 years ago. Terms were not disclosed. Segal and the InstaTrac team will join the Globe, with Segal staying on.

What does InstaTrac do? It sells subscription tools that make government activity easier to track. Its products include MassTrac, a legislative tracking platform covering Beacon Hill, and MuniTrac, a growing municipal service offering searchable access to local meetings, agendas, minutes, and transcripts across the state.

Who uses it? Subscribers span public officials, government affairs professionals, nonprofits, businesses, researchers, and municipal leaders.

What's the rationale? The deal expands the Globe's ability to access and analyze government information across Massachusetts. For its journalists, the platform offers new ways to monitor government activity and identify emerging stories, with municipal data and transcripts expected to support expanded local coverage.

"Michael and his team recognized early on that people don't just need access to information — they need help understanding what it means," said Linda Henry, chief executive officer of Boston Globe Media. "That philosophy aligns directly with our mission."

What changes for customers? Not much in the near term. The Globe said it will keep operating existing services and supporting current subscribers, with more investment planned in the coming months.

"InstaTrac customers can expect the same commitment, the same expertise, and the same focus," said Dhiraj Nayar, president of Boston Globe Media. Shira Center, the Globe's vice president of innovation and strategic initiatives, will lead the integration.

The signal: News organizations are increasingly buying data tools rather than just producing reporting, folding structured government information into both their journalism and paid subscription products. For the Globe, InstaTrac adds a recurring-revenue business and a pipeline of civic data at a time when local coverage is under financial pressure.
