Try Dealroom →, a Tokyo startup developing Japanese multimodal AI foundation models and Physical AI platform technologies. The machine tool maker announced the early-stage investment on July 16, though it did not disclose the amount.

What does Noetra do? Established in January 2026 and renamed from Japan Foundation Model Development Co., Ltd. in June, Noetra builds foundation models trained on industrial data. Its goal is Physical AI that lets robots and machines perceive real environments and autonomously make decisions. The company is led by Hironobu Tamba, president and chief executive officer.

What's the endgame? DMG MORI is pursuing what it calls Machining Transformation, integrating machine tools, automation, and digital technologies. It expects Japanese-developed AI to help digitise the tacit knowledge accumulated on factory floors and to advance process optimisation, quality, and workforce support.

Why now? DMG MORI points to labour shortages and the need for productivity gains as reasons AI matters to manufacturing. Domestically built models also suit sensitive applications such as national security and export control.

The signal: Noetra plans to share its research broadly with Japanese companies and research institutions, aiming to build a cross-industry AI ecosystem. The investment reflects a push to strengthen Japan's competitiveness in both AI and manufacturing by keeping foundation model development at home.
