Annual Reviews acquires event platform Underline Science

What each side brings: Annual Reviews publishes 51 journals across the biomedical, life, physical, and social sciences, and runs meetings including the Charleston Conference. Underline, founded in 2019, provides an event application, video preservation, ticketing, attendee and speaker management, and onsite audiovisual services.

What changes for clients? The combined services support virtual, hybrid, and in-person events. Underline's team and operations will stay in place, according to CEO Jernej MasnecDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, "ensuring continuity for clients."

What's the endgame? Annual Reviews wants to pair publishing with the events that carry ideas forward. "Publishing review articles is one way of advancing knowledge; fostering the conversations that move ideas forward is another," said Richard Gallagher, president and editor-in-chief.

The signal: The deal reflects scholarly publishers broadening beyond journals into services that deepen ties with research communities and extend the reach of academic events.
