Silicon Microgravity raises £6M seed to scale UK sovereign chip production
What's the deal? Silicon Microgravity (SMG) has raised £6 million in a seed round to expand UK manufacturing and semiconductor production for its MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) devices used in defence and space applications. West Hill CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → led the round, with the UK Innovation & Science Seed FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and uki2s also participating.
What's the endgame? SMG's MEMS technology is built for extreme environments, spanning launch vehicles, lunar and planetary exploration, satellite communications, and navigation. Its accelerometers already support advanced space programmes and may extend to satellite-enabled critical mineral exploration.
What's the money for? SMG said the funding will scale UK manufacturing, add engineering and semiconductor production capacity, and accelerate commercial partnerships across Europe and the United States.
Why now? The round arrives as governments and industry push to build sovereign semiconductor supply chains and reduce dependence on overseas manufacturing for critical technologies. For uki2s — managed by Future Planet CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → — the deal marks its first backing of SMG through its Space Portfolio.
The investors framed SMG as a dual-use business the UK needs to scale. "Supporting sovereign capability in these areas is essential if the UK is to remain competitive in critical technologies over the coming decades," said Alexander Leigh, investment director at uki2s.
The signal: At £6 million, the round sits in the top 3% of all seed rounds for UK recognition technology companies, based on 294 comparable deals. That places SMG among the better-capitalised early-stage players in a sector increasingly tied to national security and space competitiveness.
