Who's who? Boulder-based Optera, founded in 2006 as a sustainability consultancy before pivoting to software, helps companies produce audit-grade emissions figures across operations, supply chains, and product life cycles. New York-based Green Project, founded in 2021 by former Goldman SachsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → strategist Sam StarkDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, sells AI tools for carbon accounting, supplier engagement, and renewable energy procurement.

What's the endgame? The combined company plans a single platform covering carbon accounting, supplier engagement, compliance reporting, and decarbonization. It will pair Green Project's supplier engagement program with Optera's accounting to flag emissions hotspots and connect users to a marketplace for renewable energy certificates, insets, sustainable aviation fuel, and biomethane.

Why now? The companies point to tightening rules — California's SB 253, the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) — that raise compliance pressure. Scope 3 emissions remain the largest source of disclosure burden and supplier risk.

"For years, the sustainability industry has focused on measurement," said StarkDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, chief executive officer of Green Project. He said the deal creates "the platform that closes" the gap "from measurement to action."

The context: The acquisition is Green Project's latest, following purchases of decarbonization planning platform Zeroute and Scope 3-focused Emitwise. Green Project itself was acquired in 2023 by environmental solutions firm ACT GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

Tim WeissDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Optera's chief executive officer and co-founder, said joining Green Project and ACT Group lets it operate at "an incredible scale, with a truly global reach and end-to end solution."

The signal: The deal reflects consolidation in carbon software as fragmented measurement tools give way to integrated platforms — a shift driven by regulation pushing companies from reporting emissions toward cutting them.
