Cornea Sense raises €1.1M pre-seed to make corneal hydration measurable

Try Dealroom →, an Aalto University spinout, has raised more than €1.1 million in pre-seed funding to develop non-invasive corneal hydration measurement. What's the endgame? The Espoo-based medtech combines terahertz sensing with optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure corneal hydration — a clinically relevant parameter that today lacks a practical, direct measurement method.
Why now? Founded in January 2026, the company builds on research that began at Aalto University in 2018. A two-year Business Finland Research-to-Business project during 2024–2025 produced a working THz+OCT prototype and clinical partnerships, setting up the commercial push.
Where the money goes: The funding will support a human-compatible research prototype, technical and clinical validation, preclinical studies, and regulatory preparation.
"It is not that the parameter does not matter — it is that no one has had a practical way to measure it. That is what we are changing," said Anton Chernenko, chief executive officer and co-founder.
What could go wrong? The technology remains pre-clinical, with human-compatible testing, validation, and regulatory approval still ahead before any commercial product.
The signal: At €1.1 million, the round sits in the bottom quartile of comparable deals by size — modest capital typical of early-stage, deep-tech medtech spun out of university research, where proof-of-concept precedes scale.
