Step-up: The package is double the $70 million loan Torrecom secured in 2023, which was backed by IDB Invest, Proparco, and DEG. The latest round widens that lender base to five international investors spanning development finance institutions, funds, and commercial banks.

What's the endgame? Founded in 2010, Torrecom owns and operates more than 1,700 wireless infrastructure sites. The financing will grow that portfolio to over 2,550 towers across Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, and Peru.

Why now? IDB Invest says the funding will improve network efficiency by promoting tower co-location and supporting 5G deployment. It expects the expansion to cut costs and free mobile operators to focus investment on core network upgrades.

"We see significant opportunities to extend infrastructure into markets where demand for connectivity continues to grow," said Torrecom chief executive officer Maria Scotti.

The signal: Development finance institutions are anchoring debt for Latin American digital infrastructure, using shared-tower models to stretch connectivity into underserved markets. "Expanding access to robust digital infrastructure is key to driving productivity," said Ilan Goldfajn, president of the IDB Group.
