Joule's commits record £2m to restore Harborne's New Inn pub
What's the deal? Joule's BreweryDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → will invest £2m to restore the New Inn in Harborne after securing planning permission, marking its biggest-ever cash commitment to a single site.
Who's behind it? Joule's is an independent brewer based in Market Drayton that operates around 40 pubs, which it calls "Taphouses." It spent two years developing the plans while getting to know the community.
What changes? The approved design keeps the original bar and Victorian parlour rooms at the heart of the pub, adding new spaces and an extensive garden. Work begins in 2027, and the pub will keep trading under Adrian Walsh and Bernadette Quigley.
Why it matters: "The New Inn represents the biggest investment we've ever made into one of our Taphouses, with more than £2m committed to its future," the brewer said. Development director Anna Brakel said the company was "absolutely delighted our plans have been approved."
Why now? The news follows another Birmingham milestone: the opening of the restored Victorian Red Lion in the Jewellery Quarter on July 14, 2026.
The signal: For a small brewer, the outlay underscores a bet on restoring rather than replacing historic community pubs. As managing director Vicky Colclough put it, projects like this "only happen because people continue to support what we do."
