Volue acquires Salzburg's FlexPowerHub (Cognify) in third Austrian deal since 2024

What's the deal? Norwegian energy technology group VolueDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired Salzburg-based FlexPowerHub, officially registered as CognifyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → GmbH. The startup automates bidding intelligence for balancing energy markets — where grid operators buy short-term capacity to keep the power grid stable. Financial terms were not disclosed.

What does FlexPowerHub do? Its software automates the entire bidding process on balancing markets for power producers, traders, and battery operators, from strategy to final submission of bids to transmission grid operators. It generates automatic bids for the FCR, aFRR, and mFRR products and forecasts how much capacity will actually be activated — a feature aimed at battery storage operators.

Beyond the DACH region, FlexPowerHub also operates in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. According to the commercial register, utility Salzburg AG held roughly 20% of the company alongside its founders.

Why now? Europe's shift to volatile renewables is raising demand for flexibility, making balancing markets larger and more complex. Cross-border platforms such as PICASSO and MARI now coordinate activation across much of the EU, settlement runs in 15-minute intervals, and battery storage is pushing in as a fast-growing, price-sensitive bidder. Manual bidding is hitting its limits.

What's the endgame? Volue plans to combine FlexPowerHub's technology with its own portfolio, including Optimeering, which forecasts real-time conditions on balancing markets. Balancing markets are "the fastest-changing" part of power markets, said Volue chief executive officer Stephan Sieber, with the advantage going to players who can look further ahead and act faster.

FlexPowerHub managing director Martin Simmerstatter framed the sale around reach: with Volue, the company can bring its technology to a much larger customer base across Europe. Oslo-based Volue employs more than 750 staff and serves customers in over 40 countries.

The signal: The deal is Volue's third Austrian purchase in quick succession, part of an aggressive European acquisition strategy. It fully acquired Vienna's HAKOM Time Series in early 2026 and Vienna-based algorithmic power trading firm PowerBot in late 2024, following earlier buys of Germany's Likron in 2020 and ProCom in 2021 — a steady roll-up of energy trading software as balancing markets consolidate.
