Apryse buys PDF Tools to expand in Europe, add AI redaction

What changes for customers? Apryse's more than 20,000 customers, including 85% of the Fortune 100, gain expanded capabilities in three areas: PDF/A conversion and archiving, compression and optimization, and AI Smart Redact, a self-hosted tool for detecting and removing sensitive data.
Those additions target mission-critical, compliant document workflows across software, financial services, healthcare, education, and government. PDF Tools customers now operate within the Apryse ecosystem.
Why now? "PDF Tools brings highly specialized expertise in areas like PDF/A conversion and compression that are critical for our customers," said Cassidy Smirnow, chief executive officer of Apryse. She added that AI Smart Redaction builds on Apryse's work helping teams embed AI-powered document workflows into their applications.
For Smallpdf, the sale sharpens its focus. "Apryse is a natural owner for enterprise developer tooling like PDF Tools, while Smallpdf can now put its full focus into its consumer and business platform that serves tens of millions of users per month," said Moritz Werner, chief executive officer of Smallpdf.
The signal: The deal reflects consolidation in document processing, as vendors split enterprise developer tools from consumer platforms and race to embed AI into compliance-heavy workflows.
