TGUC Financial builds $150M loan portfolio for underserved homeowners

What's the deal? TGUC FinancialDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Black-owned home-improvement financing platform, has assembled a $150 million loan portfolio to fund home upgrades in underserved communities. The wholesale capital comes from a partnership between a credit union and a Community Development Financial Institution, aimed at low-income borrowers.

What's the endgame? Founded in 2023 by Russell Bryant and based in Englewood, Colorado, TGUC lends homeowners up to $100,000 for renovation projects. It also gives contractors a platform to offer that financing to their clients.

Why now? Bryant argues the sector has long overlooked borrowers who fall outside the prime-credit box. "The home-improvement lending market was built to serve people who already have easy access to credit. We built TGUC for the ones it wasn't built for," he said in a press release.

How it works: The platform runs AI across its business and customer-service operations, backed by human agents. Its SmartMatch tool pairs homeowners with vetted contractors.

The signal: By channelling institutional capital toward borrowers outside the prime-credit box, TGUC is testing whether home-equity lending can profitably reach the communities it has historically bypassed. "That box has a history. We're in business to redraw it," Bryant said.
