Heineken moves to buy Costa Rican water brand RainForest Water

What's the deal? HeinekenDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Costa Rica, through its legal entity Distribuidora La Florida S.A., has signed a definitive agreement to acquire RainForest Water, a Costa Rican premium artesian water brand from La Esperanza de Sarapiquí. It marks Heineken's first brand acquisition in the country. Terms were not disclosed, and the deal excludes real estate.

What each side brings: RainForest Water bottles water directly from its natural source in 100% recyclable, reusable aluminium containers, having stripped plastic from its supply chain. Its Sarapiquí plant runs on renewable energy and funds local reforestation and biodiversity programmes.

What's the endgame? Heineken's global distribution network will serve as a launch platform to take the water into new international markets. RainForest Water said it would keep intact the sustainable model that defined it.

Why it matters: "This agreement confirms that innovation, quality and purpose can turn a Costa Rican product into a brand of international value," said Ariel Aizenman, founder and chief executive officer of RainForest Water, who credited employees, suppliers and community partners.

What could go wrong? The transaction is subject to standard closing conditions and regulatory review. Heineken has submitted the deal to Costa Rica's Commission to Promote Competition (Coprocom) for approval.

The signal: The move signals a global beverage giant reaching into a small, sustainability-led brand — betting that clean supply chains and renewable production can scale beyond a niche market. For local premium producers, it points to a route from artisanal roots to international distribution.
