Purple Group buys AI investment startup Telescope to power its trading stack
What's the deal? South Africa's Purple GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and its EasyEquitiesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → subsidiary have agreed to acquire 100% of Telescope, splitting the shares and options equally between the two buyers. The purchase price was not disclosed in the announcement.
What does Telescope do? The company provides AI-powered investment discovery, research, technical analysis, conversational intelligence, and compliance infrastructure to brokerages and trading platforms. Its clients include IG GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, CMC MarketsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, tastytrade, Sharesies, and EasyEquities.
Telescope reaches more than 3 million end users across seven jurisdictions and 13 languages. Its compliance layer, Guardrails, has completed more than 2.5 million checks across global markets.
What's the endgame? Purple Group serves 1.3 million active clients holding R100 billion in assets. EasyEquities was Telescope's first enterprise partner and already runs one of its tools.
The deal will roll out Telescope's full product suite across the group's entire stack, pairing its infrastructure with more than a decade of client data and behavioural insights. It also opens a new enterprise revenue stream through Telescope's global B2B partnerships.
Why now? The agreement was signed on July 10, 2026. It hinges on approval from the South African Reserve Bank's Financial Surveillance Department, with a long stop date 90 days after signature, and takes effect 10 business days after conditions are met.
What could go wrong? Beyond regulatory sign-off, the sellers must certify that no material adverse change has occurred since signing. Absorbing an enterprise vendor into a single group could also strain Telescope's relationships with rival brokerages that are its customers.
The signal: Trading platforms are moving to own the AI tooling that shapes how retail investors research and trade, rather than rent it. By buying its supplier outright, Purple Group is betting that proprietary AI and compliance infrastructure — not just distribution — will define the next phase of competition in online investing.
