South Africa's PIC lifts Sasol stake to 20.2%

Why now? The notification follows section 122(3)(b) of the Companies Act, which requires disclosure once a shareholder crosses certain ownership thresholds. Crossing 20% is a notable marker under South African takeover rules.
What changes? Sasol said it will file the relevant notifications with the Takeover Regulation Panel and the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission, as required under the Companies Act.
The disclosure named the PIC, a South African state-owned asset manager, as the acquirer. Sasol is a Johannesburg-listed energy and chemicals producer, trading on both the JSE and NYSE.
Sasol shares traded at 17,251 on the JSE on July 13, up 236 points, or 1.39%, on the day.
The signal: A larger PIC position concentrates ownership of one of South Africa's biggest industrial groups in state hands, deepening the government-linked investor's influence over a company central to the country's energy sector.
