Michaels acquires Jo-Ann's brands, opens Shoreline store in old rival's space
What's the deal? Michaels Arts & Crafts has acquired the intellectual property and private label brands of Jo-Ann FabricsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the crafting chain that collapsed into bankruptcy in early 2025. The deal, completed June 5, 2025, includes Jo-Ann's Big Twist brands but not its physical stores.
Why now? Jo-Ann filed for a second bankruptcy in early 2025 after an initial filing failed to fix its finances. It shuttered 500 of its 800 stores, including the Shoreline location at Parkwood Plaza, then closed the rest.
What's the endgame? Michaels is expanding its fabric, sewing, and yarn range, adding more than 600 products across new and existing brands. The additions span sewing and quilting supplies, fabric, yarn, specialty threads, and sewing machines.
Michaels also holds the former Jo-Ann building at Parkwood Plaza and plans to open there this year. It is renovating the space and hiring staff.
The signal: The move absorbs a decades-old rival's brands and, in Shoreline, its physical footprint — positioning Michaels to capture crafters, quilters, and sewers left without their longtime store.
