Marubeni buys Swiss-Austrian machine tool distributor TOLUS in European market push

What's the deal? MarubeniDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired 100% of TOLUS Group AG, a Swiss-Austrian distributor of machine tools, peripheral equipment, and automation systems, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. The move marks the Japanese trading house's full-scale entry into machine tool sales in Europe. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Who is TOLUS? Based in Switzerland, TOLUS has sold machine tools from leading Japanese manufacturers across Switzerland and Austria for more than 50 years, with cumulative sales of over 5,000 units. Its predecessors, Suvema and Newemag, were founded in 1974 and 1975. Beyond supplying equipment, it designs automation systems that cut labour costs and boost efficiency.

Why now? The global machine tool market is worth an estimated $90–100 billion and is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 7% between 2025 and 2030. Europe is the world's second-largest market, and Switzerland and Austria host precision-heavy industries such as luxury watches, medical devices, and automobiles.

What's the endgame? Marubeni has sold Japanese-made machine tools for over 70 years across markets including the United States, Mexico, Vietnam, Brazil, and India. The deal fits its Mid-Term Management Strategy GC2027, which prioritises platform-type businesses combining growth, high added value, and scalability. TOLUS gives it an established European foothold and engineering base.

What's driving demand? Generative AI is fuelling demand for machining of parts tied to AI data centres and next-generation semiconductors. Marubeni also expects physical AI to lift demand for high-precision components such as robot joint parts, and aims to serve these emerging hardware fields.

The signal: The acquisition reflects how Japanese trading houses are building regional platforms to capture demand from AI-driven manufacturing. By anchoring itself in Europe's precision-machining heartland, Marubeni positions itself at the base of the supply chain for the hardware behind next-generation computing.
