AAPG merges Datapages into nonprofit publisher GeoScienceWorld

What's the deal? The American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) will merge DatapagesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, its wholly owned geoscience publishing arm, into GeoScienceWorldDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (GSW), a nonprofit publisher. The Datapages board and AAPG's executive committee approved the deal, announced July 9, 2026.

What does each side bring? Datapages offers a digital archive of geologic publications from more than 60 geological societies, plus pay-per-view and subscription access, with strong reach into the corporate market. GSW brings a modern publishing platform and an established presence across academic, government, and institutional markets.

Why now? Datapages has served the geoscience community for nearly three decades, and the merger is designed to modernise its platform. "This merger positions it for its next chapter, with stronger technology, broader reach and continuity for the people who depend on it," said Tom Wilker, AAPG's executive director.

What changes for customers? Datapages will continue to host AAPG's Search & Discovery content and the AAPG Bulletin. AAPG, publishing partners, and authors retain ownership of their content, and AAPG, Datapages, and GSW say they will support publishing partners through the transition.

What's the endgame? GSW is a 501(c)(3) organisation founded in 2004 by AAPG and other geoscience organisations to support independent societies through shared publishing technology. It now works with 39 society publishers and serves more than 900 institutions and companies worldwide.

What could go wrong? Integrating Datapages' legacy archive onto GSW's platform and retaining its corporate customer base during the transition are the practical tests. AAPG, which has been part of GSW governance since its founding, says it will keep "a meaningful voice" in the platform's direction.

The signal: The deal reflects consolidation among geoscience publishers as smaller societies pool technology to stay discoverable and viable. "This merger reflects GeoScienceWorld's mission to support society publishers and make trusted geoscience research more discoverable, accessible and impactful," said Phoebe McMellon, GSW's chief executive officer.
