Japan's LegalTech raises ¥114M to build R&D AI platform for 17 strategic sectors

What's the deal? Tokyo-based LegalTechDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised ¥114 million to expand into a research and development AI platform, the company announced. The round brings its total funding to ¥493 million.

What's the endgame? The startup, founded in March 2021 and led by chief executive officer Tomoyuki Hirai, currently runs three products: patent-search tool MyTokkyo.Ai, knowledge base IPGenius, and secure data room LegalTech VDR. It plans to connect these into a single platform that lets companies safely apply AI to technical documents, patent data, research materials, and experimental data.

Why now? As generative AI spreads, companies want to apply it across R&D information — but that data is often confidential and scattered across departments. LegalTech aims to give research, intellectual property, and legal teams a shared, secure base to work from.

What's the money for? The company will strengthen cross-searching and analysis features, develop AI agents for tasks such as prior-art searches and competitor analysis, harden its security and access controls, and expand deployment support for large enterprises.

The signal: LegalTech is positioning itself around Japan's government growth strategy, which targets large public and private investment in 17 strategic sectors including AI and semiconductors, quantum, biotech, and fusion energy. "In growth industries such as AI, semiconductors, quantum, biotech, GX, and materials, R&D speed and the strategic use of intellectual property will become ever more important," Hirai said, betting that secure AI access to technical and patent data will decide competitiveness.
