TSMC gets nod for $20B Arizona expansion, lifting US commitment to $44B

What's the deal? Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs has approved US$12.9B capital injection from TSMC into its US subsidiary, TSMC Arizona Corporation. The funds will build 12-inch wafer fabs and advanced packaging plants.

What's the endgame? The approval covers equity investment only. TSMC said it will separately assess bond issuance or loans to cover additional US expansion costs.

With this round added to a previously approved $24 billion, total sanctioned TSMC investment in its US operations reaches $44 billion — roughly US$40.5B.

Why now? The ministry said it approved the injection after weighing TSMC's manufacturing processes, output, technology research, and continued investment plans in Taiwan.

What could go wrong? The move drew sharp criticism from Beijing. At a regular briefing, Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Binhua accused Taiwan's ruling party of using TSMC's US investment as a pledge of "relying on the US to seek independence" and of "unreservedly clinging to the US."

Chen argued the strategy sacrifices Taiwan's industrial base and interests in exchange for so-called support. "The further they go down the wrong road, the more the worries of Taiwan's people will become reality," he said.

The signal: The expansion deepens TSMC's US footprint amid pressure to localise advanced chip production, while sharpening cross-strait tensions over Taiwan's most strategic industry.
