McInnes Cooper acquires Kranc Associates for Toronto foothold

What's the endgame? McInnes Cooper said the acquisition advances its growth strategy by giving it an instant presence in Toronto. It combines Kranc's specialist immigration work with the firm's existing business law focus.
Why now? The firm pointed to the overlap of corporate immigration with employment, tax, corporate, and regulatory issues. It said the combination creates a new connection point for clients whose needs cross provincial and national borders.
"We have served clients with needs that extend into Ontario and beyond for many years," said managing partner Kevin Kiley. The transaction, he added, lets the firm "establish a meaningful presence in Toronto and bring our collaborative, solutions-driven approach to a broader Canadian audience."
Kranc Associates principal Benjamin Kranc, who leads the practice, said the merger would create new opportunities for clients needing complex corporate immigration support and expand access to legal and advisory services.
The expansion angle: Separately, McInnes Cooper moved in early July 2026 to a new office in Membertou, Nova Scotia, with space for 61 people. Sydney lead partner Dwight Rudderham said the move followed sustained growth in the firm's client base and team in Cape Breton since a 2022 merger. The firm chose Membertou to support local economic development in an Indigenous-led business hub.
The signal: The two moves point to a regional firm building scale through acquisition. McInnes Cooper has previously merged with The Breton Law Group and LaFosse MacLeod in Sydney, and with Barteaux Labour and Employment Lawyers in Halifax, and is now pushing beyond Atlantic Canada into the country's largest legal market.
