Principal to acquire Beam Benefits
What's the deal? Principal Financial GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has agreed to acquire Beam Benefits, a digitally-native employee benefits company serving over 25,000 small businesses. Beam offers dental, vision, and ancillary coverage built on a cloud-native tech stack with AI at its core, and generated roughly $175 million in premiums in 2025. Terms were not disclosed.
Why now? Beam is available in 46 states and the District of Columbia, and has scaled quickly in the small business segment. Principal, which already serves 180,000 employers, is targeting above-market growth among small and midsized businesses (SMBs).
What's the endgame? "This acquisition strengthens our momentum and delivery of above-market growth in that segment," said Amy Friedrich, president of benefits and protection at Principal. It expects the deal to accelerate premium and fee growth for its Specialty Benefits unit to at or above the high end of its 5–9% medium-term target range in 2027.
Beam's chief executive officer, Tolithia Kornweibel, framed the tie-up as a continuation of the company's mission to modernise employee benefits. "Joining forces with Principal is the natural next step in our journey," she said.
What could go wrong? The acquisition is expected to close in the latter half of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Principal said its capital deployment and earnings per share growth targets for 2026 remain unchanged.

The signal: The deal pairs a 146-year-old insurer with a digital-first challenger, a bet that Beam's AI-powered underwriting and self-service tools can help Principal win the crowded but fragmented small business benefits market.
