TEDCO backs cancer immunotherapy startup Irazú with $250K seed round

What's the deal? Irazú Oncology has raised $250,000 in a seed round led by TEDCODealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the Maryland Technology Development Corporation. The funding came through TEDCO's Seed Funds via the State Small Business Credit Initiative.

What's the endgame? Based at the University of Maryland BioPark in Baltimore, Irazú is developing faster, cheaper cancer immunotherapies. Its platform uses outer membrane vesicles — bacteria-derived nanoparticles — to display and deliver tumour antigens.

Why does it matter? Immunotherapy reaches too few patients and costs too much to develop, chief executive Jeff Strovel said. His platform aims to deliver multiple tumour targets in a single therapy "designed to drive a durable anti-tumor response."

The backstory: Irazú is a long-standing TEDCO portfolio company. It won a Company Formation Award through the Maryland Innovation Initiative in 2023, joined the Federal Labs Leveraging Innovation to Products pilot programme, and took an earlier Seed Funds investment in 2025.

What's the money for? The capital will help move the company's work toward the clinic, Strovel said.

The signal: TEDCO chief executive Troy LeMaile-Stovall framed the deal as part of Maryland's push as a biopharma cluster. State-backed seed capital continues to fill early-stage gaps in life sciences, where research is capital-intensive and slow to reach patients.
